Second go with Ubuntu wasn't so successful, tried it on a recent dell with a ATI Radeon x600 as well as an on board graphics card, and the x server crashed, there is a lot of documentation on how to get it running on the forums. I guess with more recent boxes it takes a while for the new cards to be supported properly.

Still going to try it on the old celeron 400mhz when I go back after I clear a bit of space on the hard disk for it
